We are not a nonprofit, but a Public Benefit Corporation (PBC), which means that we’re a business that has social good at the heart of our mission. For Imperfect, this means eliminating food waste and building a better food system for everyone.
We’re a for-profit social enterprise because we believe that business can be a force for good. Our hope is to recover as much food from going to waste as possible and make that accessible and affordable to as many people as possible. While our roots are in the nonprofit world, we found that the logistics and cost of getting fresh produce from farms to people who need it was not scalable. Being a for-profit business has allowed us to donate more food to our food bank partners than we ever would have as a nonprofit -- 4 million pounds and counting as of January 2020. And with our reduced-cost boxes for SNAP recipients, we’ve been able to make fresh, healthy, and delicious produce available at an affordable price to even more people.
