Yes! Maintaining produce quality is one of our top priorities, and all produce that comes into our warehouse gets sorted and inspected by our quality control team. We make sure to communicate our standards clearly to farmers, but every now and then we receive produce that is damaged during transit or slightly moldy due to moisture (which is a real issue in rainy California winters!) Items like this that aren't up to our quality standards will get composted. If we have a surplus of a given item or discontinue something as the seasons change, we'll donate our extra produce to a community food bank. We are committed to reducing waste in our warehouse, so anything that can't end up in a box gets donated if it's still good to eat, and composted if it's no longer edible.
